The first type of vehicle part that involves mind when fixing one's car is OEM auto parts. The word "OEM" stands for "oe manufacturer," which means that OEM auto parts come immediately from the company that made the car to begin with. In other words, if someone's Chevrolet Cavalier were to fail due to alternator or beginner then an OEM alternator or starter could be purchased to be able to repair the car. The benefit for buying original equipment manufacturer vehicle parts is the fact that there will generally be considered a warranty on the part that is purchased. In addition, you are usually assured that the part will work and fit the automobile on the first try.
A downside to purchasing OEM vehicle parts is the fact they are generally a lot more expensive that other types of vehicle parts. Whereas other auto parts may be around $50, the same automobile parts that are bought from the OEM may be just as much as $150. The purchase price makes all the difference, too, when repairing your car, so it may not automatically behoove you to purchase OEM car parts.
Alternatively, the other type of auto parts that can be purchased when restoring an automobile is after-market auto parts, or car parts that are created for the same auto by third-parties. These automobile parts are generally much much easier to run into, and even more auto repair shops and retail stores generally bring after-market automobile parts instead of OEM vehicle parts. That's one of the big advantages to buying those types of car parts, but another is that they are much less expensive than OEM automobile parts. This is touched on within the last paragraph about OEM parts, but after-market vehicle parts are usually 50% or even more less than the initial manufacturer's automobile parts.
With that said, it is very up to the individual and the problem when the automobile is being mended. Many people choose OEM vehicle parts because they will be the safest kind of parts to go with, but quarrels for third-party vehicle parts are because they're much cheaper will be more accessible.
